ARTIST STATEMENT

"My work is an extension of my existence.  I paint as on ongoing commentary on what I see, what I feel, what I think - the endless reality of things happening at once.  I paint a narrative of an incessant process of living.  What the paintings say is 'this is what it is to walk down the street in the rain, this is what it feels like to know that people do not have homes even as cities are full of them, or this is the unconsciousness that breeds universal anger – the calm before the storm’s advance.'  I paint modern landscapes with a social message.  I use words, hidden or revealed.  I use symbols whose meanings are yet to be revealed.  I indicate what is happening around the corner – in the alley.  I want to insinuate enough to make the audience fill in the dots.  I am searching constantly to use the unspoken language, to communicate through the subliminal.  To reach the unconscious, and engage it in the conscious. I paint real occurrences and include the subtext.  I am certain that art reaches truth at some point and wakes it up.  As an artist it is my job to get out of the way and let it happen.  D. Walker 2007
