ARTIST STATEMENT Born and raised along the Susquehanna River in Columbia, the river has been a source of inspiration my whole life. As I child, I was always painting and drawing my surroundings, and was encouraged by my Art teachers to pursue my desire to paint. Presently, I paint with a group of plein aire ("out in the open air") painters, including J.D. Wissler, who has been my mentor. The rivers and lakes around where I live, with their ever changing qualities, bring a freshness to my painting that simply cannot be captured in the studio. I find pleasure in communicating the beauty I see, capturing it on panel or paper. As I explore two very different mediums in oils and in watercolors, I find the essence is the same, but the language is different. Oil painting is more of a struggle, while watercolor happily does it's own thing, making the process fun. Inside "plein aire" painting features fruit and flowers as the subject rather than the landscape - the experience of water becomes part of the process, rather than the subject. A. Strickler 2007 |
