ARTIST STATEMENT
Peter Sculthorpe needs to paint. He is driven daily by nothing
more than an insatiable need to explore the world around him
with pigment and brush. Tree, sky, stone wall or barn, Belted
Galloway cows and bicycles, he lays them out in scenes that
elicit a familiarity - a comfortable knowing. Ensconced in his
studio, just outside of Wilmington, Delaware, in an area rife
with undisturbed fields and clear skies, Peter paints daily.
"The thrill if painting - breaking it down to the bare bones,"
the passion, he says, "comes from the process." His
characteristic stone walls, the age and wear of generations
clearly defined and meticulously executed used to be a task -
a part of the painting that had to be done - but no longer.
Now the process sings, alongside the indescribable need to
"leave the fabric of the everyday" and simply paint
