Fine Art & Jazz at Lynden Gallery
A quiet house settled among trees, tiny fishing villages with boats scattered along the shore, and calm buildings lined with careful shadows, are the imagery of Lou Schellenberg's work. Lynden Gallery presents a solo exhibition of recent work by Schellenberg, with an Artist's Reception on Friday, November 4 th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Featured jazz is by the Ryan Kauffman Trio. The event is open to the public and a $3.00 cover is appreciated but not required for admission. The exhibition will continue through November 26 th . Fusing directional lines, superb color choices, subtle nuances visible though light and shadow, and spatial navigation, Lou Schellenberg creates paintings far beyond typical realism. Rather than executing representation of subject matter, Schellenberg "explores" representation as she simplifies and reduces forms, ultimately freeing the object from realistic confinement. Although her work is recognizable, by eliminating heightened detail, Schellenberg discovers underlying abstract qualities in everyday scenes or buildings. Her simplistic approach coupled with an incredible sense of color, generates a visual culmination that is eye-catching and thoughtful. Schellenberg's work has been included in prestigious exhibitions including the Art Institute of Boston, Boston Massachusetts, The Albany Institute of of History and Art, Albany, New York, Hoyt Institute of Fine Art, New Castle, Pennsylvania, the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, The Art Center at Orange, Orange, Virginia, and the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, among others. She has been awarded the Residency Grant at the Vermont studio Center, Johnson, Vermont, First Prize, Works on Paper, "Art of the State", the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and the Fellowship with the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. Her work is held in public and private collections around the country including the Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg, Massachusettes, and MBNA in Camden, Maine. An esteemed instructor, Lou has held a position as Associate Professor of Art at Elizabethtown College since 1992. She received a Master's in Fine Art from the University of Albany, Albany, NY, and her undergraduate degrees from Framingham State College, Framingham, MA, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts. She is scheduled to participate in a gallery-to-gallery artist exchange with the George Krevsky Gallery in San Francisco, California in the spring of 2007, and will have an opportunity to take her teaching skills to the west coast. The Ryan Kauffman Trio will be the featured Jazz performers during the opening reception. Based out of Lancaster, PA, saxophonist Ryan Kauffman is active throughout south-central Pennsylvania as a soloist, bandleader, and sideman. . Ray Grunnert of Lancaster Newspapers called it "tasty" and "warmly engaging." Kauffman and his colleagues present an eclectic mix of Jazz standards and originals with a sound rooted in tradition but with a contemporary spin. Lynden Gallery hopes to tap into the jazz following in the region, ultimately bringing some bigger names to our openings each month. By combining fine art, live jazz, wine, and hors d'oeuvres, we provide patrons with a night of entertainment and a unique cultural experience worth going out of their way for. Lynden Gallery is located at 117 South Market Street in Elizabethtown, in the original, refurbished Fire Hall. The gallery is handicap accessible and offers convenient parking. Open Tuesday through Friday 9:00 to 6:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 5:00, the gallery also offers evening hours by appointment.
