ARTIST STATEMENT “When I started preparing for this show a year ago I decided to incorporate references to the heart form into each piece. It was a good discipline for me; taking me in directions I never would have taken otherwise. The opportunity of a one-person show opened up chances for doing sculpture that was intended for placing against the wall and seen only from three sides. This led into the use of the table form. This exhibit is much brighter than my last show, which used large amounts of walnut. I like the lively colors of the cherry, maple, apple and beech. The wood that I happen to come across, influences the look of each exhibit. The apple wood comes from the Masonic Orchards, and the beech was received from friends who needed to remove the tree from their yard due to blight. The Maple was from a firewood lot thinking it was oak, and much of the cherry from a large tree on the farm to which I made promises before cutting it down.” J. Hertzler 2008 John was raised on a dairy farm in Elizabethtown. After receiving degrees in English and Theology and finding verbal expression frustratingly limiting, he began to seek personal expression through sculpting. The response to his work was immediate and gratifying, and he spent the next decade sculpting and driving taxi in New York City, NY. In 1977 Hertzler returned to Lancaster County to work the family dairy farm and pretty much put sculpting on hold. In 2000, he began to sculpt again in earnest above the heifer pen on the second floor of the bank barn. "It just feels good to be sculpting again," says John. Now semi-retired, he continues to "discover his voice," through his work in alabaster, marble and wood. |
