PAUL FLURY September Afternoon, 12" x 18" oil on canvas

PAUL FLURY’s love of the Susquehanna River began as a young boy growing up in Middletown, Pennsylvania. Mesmorized by the beauty the history of the area, he spent hours of contemplation from his boat, becoming aware of the different moods of the river. He was fascinated by the mystery of the early morning hours, the mist rising above the stillness of the water, and the romance of the setting sun, it’s brilliant light and color reflected in the water.

Influenced by the Hudson River School painters, especially the work of Gifford, Church and Cole who depicted the river landscape in all its ethereal, atmospheric splendor, Flury strives for the same – brilliantly. “The peace and oneness with nature are all-encompassing. I want the viewer to capture the same sense of timelessness…tranquility, and life at a slower pace.” Paul’s work has been recognized and captured awards in Central Pennsylvania, including the Robert Fuller Award, Art Association of Harrisburg, Harrisburg, PA; the Grumbacher Gold Medallion Award for Exceptional Merit, York Art Association, York, PA; Best of Show and First Place in the Professional Division, Lancaster Open Art Show, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He currently lives and works in Elizabethtown.

ANNIE STRICKLER Rocks at Royalton, 7 ½ x 15 ¾ oil on panel ANNIE STRICKLER, capturing life’s moments in time and place, finds her passion in plein aire’, or “in the air” painting. Interpreting the landscape on site, typically in one setting, colors and relationships between the land, water, and sky have a freshness that can’t be accomplished in a studio setting. Growing up along the river in Bainbridge, Pennsylvania, her love of the river echo’s Flury’s. “I try to capture the moment in time and space in one sitting, because when you go back, it is never the same. Each painting is declared finished when I pack up an leave – the moment has passed.”

Strickler began her art education at the York Academy of Arts, in York, PA. Her work has been exhibited in the Art of the State, Pennsylvania State Museum, Harrisburg, PA, and the Lancaster Open Exhibition, Lancaster Museum of Art, Lancaster, PA. Annie paints regularly with JD Wissler of the Art Association of Harrisburg and a local group of plein aire’ painters. She lives and works in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. FRONT WALL FEATURE TOBY RICHARDS will exhibit work from his “River Rocks Collection”, which premiered during the 2008 Downtown Lancaster Art Walk at Tippetts Weaver Architects. His exploration of the interaction of light and shadow, line and form, led to this collection of abstract black and white photographs of water eroded rock formations from the Susquehanna River.

A graduate of Drew University, in Madison, New Jersey, Toby majored in zoology. He has exhibited his work with the New Jersey Council on the Arts Group Show, Princeton, NJ, the Kodak International Photography Contest, placing third, of Rochester, NY, and in “Portraits of Life” with the Medtronic Corporate Headquarters, Minneapolis, MN. Richard’s work has been published in numerous commercial and private venues, including “Castles in the Sand”, a book reviewed by the New York Times Book Review, and the “Vanishing Landscape, B/W Portfolio of Images, published by New Jersey Monthly Magazine. His commercial work has been published by corporations including Medtronic of Minneapolis, MN, TRW in Detroit, Michigan, Michelin in France, Beckman Coultier in Fullerton, CA, and Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ.

JAZZ BY JAY UMBLE AND BILL DRUCK will be featured at the Artists’ Reception on Friday, September 12, from 5:00 to 8:00. Bill Druck and Jay Umble, modern six or seven string guitarists and composers, are rooted in the “jazz tradition.” Each performance is an art in progress. Playing for the moment, like plein aire painting, the music, like a landscape, directs the playing. Their abstract sensibilities allow them to forge a musical path, sometimes with a modern edge – at others, more traditional. Jay Umble has studied with world-reknowned jazz guitarists Pat Martino and Joe Diorio. He is on the music faculty at Bucknell University and Susquehanna University. Several of his instructional books have been published through Mel Bay Publications.

BILL DRUCK is on the music faculty at York College of Pennsylvania where he teaches jazz and contemporary guitar. A suggested cover charge of $5.00 is suggested in support of the band, and this ongoing, popular venue at Lynden Gallery for local jazz and acoustical performers.
