ARTIST STATEMENT "Central Pennsylvania has always felt like home to me. It has provided me with rich subject matter for sculpture. From its many sources of natural forms to its interesting people, our area continues to provide more ideas for sculptures than I could ever execute. Throughout my career, various organic subjects have held my interest for sufficient time to seem to me thematic. 'Plants and Bulbs', 'Fossils', and 'Landforms', are most noteworthy. Between and among these studies, I have made sculptures about people. Chance poses or group gatherings by friends or family often provided the initial ideas for arrangement of mass and space, but forms change and evolve as the elements of media, scale, and magic become involved. Recent figurative work contains many references to studies and sculptures of the 'growing forms' that I made over a ten-year period. My most satisfying works seem to combine some passages from both organic and figurative sources in the same sculpture. I have always enjoyed the physical aspects of making sculptures. Whether it is carving an aged piece of local hardwood or modeling in clay, the sheer enjoyment of the process alone could keep me very active in the studio. I have been fortunate to learn the crafts of carving and casting from people who loved their work and who took pride in using the right process and material to articulate an idea or emotion. In my work and my teaching I pay due homage to craftsmanship and process. It is my hope that those who see my sculptures will gain some sense of the enjoyment and wonder I feel as I continue to study, work, and live in central Pennsylvania." J. Bright 2003 |
