EVA BENDER     images     resume
Eva Stina Bender SOLO
Opens Friday, June 24, 2005

Lynden Gallery presents a solo exhibition of recent work by Eva Stina Bender, opening with an Artist's Reception Friday, June 24 from 5:00 to 8:00. The reception will feature Eric Eaby on classical guitar and is open to the public at no charge. The exhibition will continue through the end of July.

EVA STINA BENDER brings a loose abstraction to her realistic watercolors. Taking in the garden, porch, and even the kitchen table for inspiration, her works are a study in light and shadow. Usually painting "on the spot" or alla prima, most of the work is finished entirely in one sitting, tho at times begs to be revisited in the studio. The paintings begin with assured, confident graphite sketches, illustrating more than just the lines and shapes of the objects before her. Lamps, flowers in vases, chairs, table tops covered with the stuff of life, and porches in their manner of keeping - none escape inscription onto the paper. Then comes color, poured or brushed on very wet paper, she adds the paint in washes and layers as the paper dries. Accidents and surprises in this less controlled application leaves the artist open to the mysteries that present themselves.

Born in Umea, Sweden, Eva Bender is self-taught with little formal art school training. Having grown up in an art and design oriented society, she learned by doing, taking inspiration from other artists, her children and the world around her. "Art is what I do," she says. "I can imagine not drawing and painting. It gives me a language… deepens and clarifies, sometimes saves your life." The influence of her rich heritage of Swedish art and design figured into the development of her creative sensibilities. Artists, textile designers, photographers, and her mother Stina, all influenced her. She particularly found the paintings of Bonnard and Cezanne "live in my head," she says with a smile, "and of course Charles Demuth."

Eva Bender's paintings are indeed like the early 1900's Demuth, born of strong sketches and awash with transparent color. Eva's work has been featured in exhibitions regionally, including the Demuth Foundation, Lancaster, Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown and most recently two pieces are included in Picturing Pennsylvania: Architecture in the State Landscape, 2005 at the Pennsylvania Governor's Residence in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Exhibiting in and around her home town of Umea, Sweden at the Lilla Galleriet, and Galleri Perols, Valbo, Sweden, she returns regularly to visit family.

Eva received her B.S. in Humanities from the Universities of Stockholm and Umea, Sweden in 1968. In 2002, she participated in "Pushing the Figure," a workshop at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her work is held in many public and private collections around the world, including Armstrong Industries, Lancaster, Pennsylvania
